La serie d'impressions sur toiles Manifestations de David Ter-Oganyan, produites pour l'exposition a la box,
fut le prealable a un projet qui s'est vu prolonge avec la collaboration d'Ilya Budraitskis, sous forme d'une
mise en pratique des intentions esthetiques de l'exposition. Une succession de rencontres et de discussions
menees par les artistes au sein d'un comite de reflexion sur les enjeux de l'activisme politique en art, cle de
voute du projet, a conduit a la manifestation du groupe le jeudi 25 octobre 2007 dans les rues de Bourges.
L'exposition en cours en est le fruit.
Des ses debuts, David Ter-Oganyan s’engage dans l’action et le trouble social, manipulant tour a tour les
concepts de violence, de revolte et de resistance. A travers ses oeuvres et ses interventions, il joue avec la
paranoia et l’imagerie du terrorisme. Il participa notamment aux expositions collectives suivantes : The
Individual and the Power, Manifesta 4 (Francfort, 2001), Art without Crime (Berlin, 2003), Art with No
Excuse, Shiusev Musee d’Architecture (Moscou, 2004), Disobedience, Kunstlerhaus Bethanien (Berlin,2005).
Ilya Budraitskis est historien, auteur et activiste politique. Membre du mouvement socialiste «VPERED !
» (En Avant !), il commence a agir sur le terrain artistique en 2003 en se rapprochant du groupe moscovite
«Radek Community». Depuis 2005, il collabore de maniere complice avec les artistes moscovites David TerOganyan et Alexandra Galkina, avec qui il participe notamment aux expositions La Nostalgie
Progressive (Prato, Italie) et Le retour de la Memoire (Tallinn, Estonie) sous le commissariat de Viktor Misiano.

Le programme Colocation s’appuie sur une serie d’invitations faites a des artistes afin de produire des projets
a partir du contexte specifique de la box. Chaque intervention fait l’objet d’une mise en situation dans le lieu,
la ville, ses conditions economiques et sociales, et souleve un certain nombre de questions relatives a l’action
artistique : la responsabilite civique et ethique de l’artiste, la reevaluation des enjeux en fonction du contexte,
le statut de la recherche en art. Colocation evoque egalement une necessaire cohabitation sur le mode du
partage des ressources.
Les artistes convoques pour Colocation endossent, implicitement ou explicitement, une forme de
responsabilite, d’investissement « reel » dans la vie « reelle », estimant que les urgences sociales et politiques
doivent permettre aux citoyens en general, et aux artistes en particulier, de prendre position de maniere
ethique. Mais l’art doit-il assumer cette responsabilite ? Pris entre utopie et effectivite, les enjeux des artistes
interventionnistes demeurent paradoxaux. En devenant efficient, « interventionniste » ou compromis, l’art
perdrait-il sa profondeur discursive ? En somme, l’art et les artistes peuvent-ils nous aider a vivre ensemble ?
Et doivent-ils tenter de le faire ?

A series of printings on canvas Manifestations by David Ter-Oganyan produced for the exhibition at la box is
the first phase of the project, which is followed by the practical realization of aesthetic intentions of the
exhibition in collaboration with Ilya Budraitskis. The artists held a number of meetings and discussions on
the stakes of political activism in art, which is the corner stone of the project, in the frame of the Reflection
Committee. It has resulted in the manifestation of the group on Thursday 25, 2007 on the streets of Bourges.
The exhibition at la box puts the archive of the project on a display.
Since the beginning of his career, David Ter-Oganyan has been concerned with social unrest, working with
the concepts of violence, revolt and resistance. With his paintings and his interventions, he plays on paranoia
and the imagery of terrorism. He have contributed to such exhibitions as The Individual and the Power,
Manifesta 4 (Frankfurt, 2001), Art without Crime (Berlin, 2003), Art with No Excuse at the Schchusev
Museum of Architecture (Moscow, 2004) and Disobedience at the Kunstlerhaus Bethanien (Berlin, 2005).
Ilya Budraitskis is a historian, public law specialist and political activist. An active participant in the
socialist movement VPERED! (Forward!), he began working in the art field in 2003, in concert with the
Radek Community. Since 2005 he has been working closely with Moscow artists David Ter-Oganyan and
Alexandra Galkina, with whom he has notably exhibited in Progressive Nostalgia in Prato, Italy and The
Return of Memory in Tallinn, Estonia, under the curatorship of Viktor Misiano.

Colocat ion [Living Together ]
The starting point for the programme Colocation [Living Together ] was a series of invitations to artists to
create projects specifically for la box. Each contribution is integrated into the la box space and the economic
and social context of the city of Bourges, and raises various questions about the nature of artistic actions: the
artist's civic and ethical responsibility, reassessment of issues according to context, and place of a specific
research in art. Plus, ultimately, the need for coexistence based on the sharing of resources.
Implicitly or explicitly the invited artists assume a kind of responsibility, a "real" commitment to "real" life,
considering that current social and political issues call for an ethical stance on the part of citizens in general
and artists in particular. But does art have to take on this responsibility? Interventionist artists face the
paradox while positioning themselves between utopianism and effectiveness. How does art manage to
combine the efficacy with its specific discursive qualities? So, can art and artists help us to live together? And
do they have to try?

the Centre for Cultural Studies and Development, and the French Embassy in Moscow. And with the cooperation of the Prometeo gallery
